Devils Lake Enrollment
Oka Skating Academy offers small-group powerskating programs for hockey athletes in Devils Lake, ND. Our programs center around 30-minute powerskating lessons focused specifically on developing skating skills through intentional, technique-driven coaching.
Rather than purchasing individual lessons, athletes enroll in a training program that includes scheduled small-group lessons, access to additional Oka ice time for practice, and other development opportunities throughout their enrolled season.
Athletes may enroll in Preseason Training, Main Season Training, or both.

Access to all Oka ice sessions during your enrolled training period for additional independent practice

Main Season Off-Ice Development
Main Season athletes also have access to additional off-ice classes at no additional cost. These opportunities extend our focus beyond skating and support the development of the whole athlete.
Throughout the season, Oka partners with professionals in different areas of athletic development to provide educational and practical sessions for our athletes. Past topics have included sports nutrition, sports psychology, recovery, and mobility, with offerings varying from season to season.
Maintaining Enrollment Benefits
Enrollment benefits are active only while an athlete is currently enrolled in an Oka training period.
Athletes who participate in Preseason but do not continue into Main Season will lose access to enrollment benefits at the conclusion of Preseason. Likewise, athletes who conclude their training after Main Season will no longer receive enrollment benefits during Spring Training.
To maintain continuous access to Oka ice time, priority opportunities, and other enrollment benefits, athletes must continue enrollment into the next available training period.
Who Can Enroll
Our small-group powerskating programs primarily serves Squirt-level hockey athletes and above who are ready to develop stronger, more efficient skating through focused, technique-driven coaching.
Athletes are placed into small groups based on a combination of age/playing level, skating ability, and availability. Because groups are intentionally kept small, enrollment and specific lesson times are subject to availability.
Have a Mite-Level Athlete?
Our small-group powerskating programs are generally not the best fit for Mite-level players. Instead, Oka offers specialized Mite-specific opportunities designed around the skating fundamentals and development needs of younger hockey athletes.

The athletes vastly improve it seems almost immediately when working with her…
“Mallory has a knack for understanding and connecting with the kids/athletes. She is always encouraging them to participate during their lessons, explaining, and demonstrating technique in a way that is understood by the kids/athletes. The athletes/kids vastly improve it seems almost immediately when working with her.”
Eric, Athlete’s Dad
His stride, agilty, and edge work is amazing and on the same level as many players much older than him.
“My son has made great improvements in his skating abilities since he started with OKA. Even though he is only a Pee Wee, his stride, agility, and edge work is amazing and on the same level as many players much older than him. These improvements have led him to build confidence which has translated into him becoming a much greater hockey player.
Athlete’s Dad

Frequently Asked Questions
Have a question about enrollment, scheduling, lessons, or training with Oka? Find answers to our most common questions below.
-
Preseason (September–October): Burdick Arena
Main Season & Spring Training (November–March): Bill Jerome Arena
Additional classes or off-ice opportunities may be held at other locations. Details will always be communicated to enrolled families.
-
Athletes must wear a helmet and bring their hockey stick. We highly recommend athletes practice in full hockey gear, particularly as they prepare for the hockey season.
Goalies should communicate with their coach regarding equipment, as training needs may vary depending on the lesson focus.
-
Payment must be completed before training begins. Families may choose to pay the full program cost upfront or, for programs longer than one month, enroll in an automatic monthly payment plan.
Families using a payment plan must be enrolled in autopay, with monthly payments automatically processed on the 1st of each month.
The annual enrollment fee and any required initial payment are due when enrollment is finalized. Optional add-on lessons and additional training opportunities are billed separately.
-
If a payment is missed or becomes past due, the athlete’s lessons and program benefits will be paused until the outstanding balance is paid.
Any lessons, ice time, or other program benefits missed while the account is past due will not be made up, credited, or refunded.
If the account remains past due for an extended period, the athlete may lose their place in the program, and their lesson spot may be offered to another athlete on the waitlist.
-
Small groups are created based on a combination of age/playing level, skating ability, and availability. Our goal is to create groups of athletes with similar skating abilities so each athlete receives an appropriate level of challenge and coaching.
-
Yes. If we determine that an athlete would be better served in a different group, we may recommend a change.
Groups work best when athletes have similar skating abilities, and any changes are made with the athlete's development and overall training environment in mind.
-
If we're unable to create an appropriate placement within the availability provided, we'll communicate that with you after scheduling is complete.
We intentionally keep groups small and prioritize appropriate athlete placement over simply filling every available spot.
-
Please let your coach know as soon as possible if your skater will be absent. Because small-group lessons involve multiple athletes and scheduled ice time, missed small-group lessons are not rescheduled, credited, or refunded.
Private add-on lessons may be eligible for rescheduling when appropriate notice is provided and scheduling allows.
-
Yes! We highly encourage athletes to use our ice. Athletes are encouraged to arrive early and/or stay after their scheduled lesson to practice whenever the ice schedule allows.
While actively enrolled, athletes may use any Oka ice session included within their current training period for independent practice, even when they do not have a scheduled lesson that day.
-
No. Completing the Enrollment Form and Prospective Skater Form allows your athlete to be considered for placement, but does not guarantee a lesson spot.
After enrollment closes, Oka reviews all submissions and builds groups based on athlete level, skating ability, availability, and available ice and coaching time. Families will then receive their athlete's lesson placement and information to confirm enrollment.
-
Yes. You'll provide your athlete's availability through the Prospective Skater Form, and that information is used when building the lesson schedule.
We work to create schedules around athlete availability, appropriate group placement, and Oka's ice and coaching availability. Specific days, times, coaches, or group placements cannot be guaranteed.
-
No. Preseason and Main Season schedules are built separately.
At the conclusion of Preseason, the schedule is reevaluated and rebuilt for Main Season. Athletes continuing with Oka may receive a different lesson day, time, or group placement.
The schedule is reevaluated again following Main Season for Spring Training in March.
-
Please let your coach know as soon as possible. Because small-group lessons involve multiple athletes, missed small-group lessons are generally not rescheduled or credited.
Private lessons may be eligible to be rescheduled when appropriate notice is provided and scheduling allows.
-
Yes, when scheduling permits. Private lessons are optional add-ons and are priced separately from your regular small-group enrollment.
Availability varies depending on ice time and the coaching schedule.
-
Oka is built around consistent, ongoing athlete development rather than one-time lessons. Our program structure gives athletes regular coaching, additional ice time to practice between lessons, and access to development opportunities beyond their scheduled lesson.
Skating development takes repetition and consistency. By working with athletes over time, our coaches can build on previous lessons, track progress, adjust training as skills develop, and create a more intentional development plan for each athlete.
For that reason, our regular powerskating lessons are offered through program enrollment rather than individually purchased lessons.
-
Yes. Families enrolling three or more athletes receive a multi-athlete discount on program rates. Applicable discounted pricing will be reflected during the enrollment process.
-
Enrollment benefits are available only while your athlete is actively enrolled in a current Oka training period.
If your athlete participates in Preseason but does not continue into Main Season, their benefits end when Preseason concludes. Likewise, athletes who do not continue from Main Season into Spring Training will no longer have access to enrollment benefits during March.
-
Spring Training is offered during March, with priority given to athletes who participated in Main Season.
The March lesson schedule is rebuilt following Main Season and may vary from week to week. New athletes are accepted only if space remains after current Oka athletes have been given the opportunity to enroll.
