Built on Skating
Where Better Hockey Starts

An intentional powerskating program where hockey athletes develop stronger skating skills, build confidence, and learn to move with greater efficiency, power, and control.

This program is designed to give hockey athletes consistent opportunities to learn, practice, and improve throughout the offseason. Through small-group instruction and guided development, athletes will receive ongoing professional coaching and feedback while continuing to build the skating skills that support success throughout the game.

Strong skating impacts every aspect of hockey. Whether an athlete is working to become more efficient, generate more power, improve agility, or simply feel more confident on the ice, this program is designed to help athletes continue progressing while developing habits that support long-term growth.

Athletes will train in small groups throughout the summer and early fall, allowing time between visits to practice independently and apply what they've learned. Each training session builds upon previous instruction, creating a development-focused experience that emphasizes consistency, purposeful practice, and meaningful improvement over time.

Throughout the program, athletes will receive professional instruction, access to practice ice, and video-based practice assignments designed to reinforce key concepts between visits. The goal is not simply to work hard during training sessions, but to help athletes better understand how to practice, improve, and continue developing long after each visit ends.

WHO IS IT FOR

This program is designed for hockey athletes who are committed to improving their skating and continuing their development throughout the offseason.

Athletes at the Squirt level and above will be prioritized for enrollment. Mite athletes are encouraged to register as well and will be accepted if space allows based on overall enrollment numbers and group availability.

The program is open to athletes from all organizations and leagues.

Athletes will be grouped based on both age and ability level to ensure an effective training environment and efficient coaching. During the first session, all athletes will participate in a placement skate to help determine final group assignments. This process allows Coach Mal to place athletes in the training group that best matches their current skill level and developmental needs.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This program consists of five development sessions spread throughout the summer and early fall. Athletes will train in small groups and follow a progressive curriculum designed to build upon previous instruction, allowing athletes to continually refine and improve their skating skills over time.

During the first session, all athletes will participate in a placement skate. This evaluation allows Coach Mal to assess each athlete's current skating ability and finalize group assignments to ensure athletes are training in an environment that best supports their development.

Once groups have been established, each athlete will be assigned a lesson time during each development session. Group lessons will typically range from 30-45 minutes and will focus on technical skating instruction, skill development, and individualized feedback.

In addition to their assigned lesson time, all registered athletes will have access to practice ice during each session date. Athletes are encouraged to use this time to practice skills, complete drills, shoot pucks, and apply the concepts introduced during instruction, provided they remain out of the way of any lessons currently in progress.

VIDEO BASED PRACTICE

Following each session, Coach Mal will provide a video review and practice focus for each group. These videos are designed to reinforce key concepts, highlight areas of emphasis, and provide guidance for independent practice between training dates.

Athlete development does not happen during lessons alone. The greatest improvements occur when athletes consistently apply feedback and practice with purpose between coaching sessions. Families are encouraged to review the video assignments together and help athletes remain focused on the skills and concepts being emphasized throughout the program.

ENROLLMENT & PROGRAM STRUCTURE

This program has been designed so that enrollment directly benefits participating athletes.

As enrollment increases, program costs are shared among more participants, helping reduce the final investment per athlete. Increased enrollment also allows for additional ice allocations, creating more opportunities for athletes to practice between lessons and continue applying the skills being taught.

A minimum enrollment of 20 athletes is required for the program to run. At this enrollment level, athletes can expect approximately three or more hours of total ice availability during each session date, with the potential for additional ice time as enrollment grows.

“Mallory has a knack for understanding and connecting with the kids/athletes. She is always encouraging them to participate during their lessons, explaining, and demonstrating technique in a way that is understood by the kids/athletes. The athletes/kids vastly improve it seems almost immediately when working with her.”

Eric, Athlete’s Dad

His stride, agilty, and edge work is amazing and on the same level as many players much older than him.

“My son has made great improvements in his skating abilities since he started with OKA. Even though he is only a Pee Wee, his stride, agility, and edge work is amazing and on the same level as many players much older than him. These improvements have led him to build confidence which has translated into him becoming a much greater hockey player.
