PRE-SEASON MITE CLASS
September 16 - October 14, 2026
Devils Lake, ND
Start the hockey season with stronger skating fundamentals and more confidence on the ice.
Give Your Mite a More Confident Start to Hockey Season
Hockey season is almost here! This pre-season class gives newer Mite-level hockey players dedicated time to work on their skating before the season gets underway.
Whether your athlete is new to hockey or has a few seasons behind them but is still developing their skating, we’ll focus on proper fundamentals to help them feel more comfortable, capable, and confident on the ice.
They don’t need to be great skaters to join us... that’s exactly what we’re here to work on!
WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?
This class is designed for Mite-level hockey players, generally ages 6–9, who have some skating experience and are still developing their skills on the ice.
This class is a great fit for:
Players who are new to hockey and want extra skating time before the season begins
Mite players who have a few seasons of experience but are still working on their skating fundamentals
Players who would benefit from becoming more comfortable and confident moving around the ice
Players must have some skating experience and be able to skate independently. They do not need to skate well, but our coaching team will not be able to physically hold or support skaters on the ice.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This is a 5-week skating-focused class designed to give Mite players dedicated time to develop the skills that will help them on the ice throughout hockey season.
Players will work on age and ability-appropriate skating fundamentals including balance, edges, forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and overall control on the ice.Our coaching team will adjust skills and progressions based on the abilities of the group.
Classes will be led by Mallory Jevning and Brody Parker, with additional coaching support as needed.
BONUS
If your player can get to the rink early, they are welcome to join us for the optional 15-minute open skate before class, 3:30-3:45pm. This gives players a little extra time on the ice to skate, get comfortable, and prepare for the class!

They do not need to skate well! However, our coaching team cannot hold or physically support skaters on the ice during class.
Is this class only for players who are new to hockey?
No! This class is also a great fit for Mite players who have a few seasons of hockey experience but would benefit from additional time focused specifically on their skating fundamentals.
Will you work on stickhandling or puck skills?
This class is specifically focused on skating development, so we will not be teaching stickhandling, shooting, or other puck skills. Players may use their sticks during certain skating drills, but our focus will remain on developing stronger skating fundamentals.

What is the 3:30–3:45 PM open skate?
Players enrolled in the class who can arrive early are welcome to get on the ice at 3:30 PM for some additional skating time before class begins. This is completely optional.
What if my player is older than Mite age?
This class is specifically designed for Mite-level players. If you have a Squirt or older player who needs skating development, Oka’s small-group skating lessons will likely be a better fit.
The exception may be a Squirt-level player who is truly new to hockey and still developing very basic skating skills. If that sounds like your player, please reach out and we can help determine if this class would be a good fit.
Does enrollment include access to other Oka Skating Academy ice times?
No. Enrollment in the Pre-Season Mite Class includes only the scheduled class times and the optional 3:30–3:45 PM open skate before each class. It does not provide access to other Oka Skating Academy ice times, open ice, or programs.
What if I’m not sure if this class is the right fit for my player?
Reach out! We’re happy to help determine whether this class is the right fit for your player before you register.
